A New Bridge For the Port Of Long Beach

Posted: Updated:
Long Beach, CA -

No offense, but when it comes to bridges, the Gerald Desmond is old and decrepit. It's also too slouchy. Time for a change!

Coming in 2016 THE NEW BRIDGE. We don't know if it will carry the same name, but according to Port of Long Beach officials it'll be tall, strong and good looking! Tall, so it can accommodate the new mega cargo ships that can't fit under the bridge now. The towers will be some 50 stories. That's 515 feet high. The deck of the bridge will be 6 lanes instead of 4 and be 205 feet off the water. The Mulhulland Bridge is 70 feet tall.  The 8000 foot bridge will even have a bike and pedestrian lane.

The old bridge will be demolished after the new bridge is completed. Look for the new bridge to start becoming visible early in 2014. Till then, lots of work will be done under the ground.

Mayor Bob Foster of Long Beach, who joined me on the Triumphant, this will have a huge impact on jobs in the Long Beach area. John Pope, with the Port of Long Beach, says it will also have a major impact on jobs in Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, Ventura and - of course - Los Angeles County.

To the bridge that has spanned the Port of Long Beach for 45 years and been a roadway for Containerized Cargo Trucks and commuters alike -- Thanks for your years of service. Your successor, which will be opened in 2016, will be a new icon for Long Beach says the Mayor. "Maybe not like the Golden Gate, but right up there!"
