DETROIT (WJBK) -

We've been thinking a lot about art these days in the city of Detroit, thinking about the treasures found at the DIA and what could happen to them in the course of the city's bankruptcy.

News that representatives from Christie's Auction House in New York were here back in June, only adding to the concern.

Robert DuMouchelle of DuMouchelle Art Galleries Company is one the Midwest's largest and most prestigious auction house.

His family's business was founded in 1927 and it's been a home for decades to Detroit's art, and culture and history.

He auctions off art work, even a ledger from the city of Detroit that shows how the city once had a surplus.  The city even loaned money to the state around the turn of the 20th century.   No selling of DIA art at DuMouchelle's. Robert wants to see the artwork at the DIA stay right where it is.

"I hope they can solve some of these problems.  I understand it need to be done right away and aggressively.  I don't think the art work is the answer." says DuMouchelle.

Bill Nowling, a spokesperson for Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr, says no one has proposed selling the art yet. "We're not looking for a short-term fix, we're focused on long-term fixes.  We will look at every asset to see what can be done," says Nowling.

So much uncertainty in the Grand River Creative Corridor, a different type of Detroit museum, even the graffiti artists are painting bankruptcy.

"A lot of times you see businesses and people hit rock bottom and right after that they make a huge comeback," says a hopeful Derek Weaver of the GRCC, "without touching the treasures of the DIA."
