FBI admits to 'very limited' drone use

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

In a response to an inquiry by Sen. Rand Paul, the Federal Bureau of Investigation admits that it is using drones in "very limited" circumstances on U.S. soil.

Paul had requested the FBI release information on its use of drones for surveillance purposes.

In its response, the FBI says that is uses drones when there is a "specific, operational need."

It used an example from earlier this year when a child was being held hostage in an underground bunker in Alabama.

The FBI admitted that it has not sought a search warrant or judicial order for any of the cases where it has used a drone.

The FBI says it doesn't plan to release more details.

Stephen D. Kelly, a Justice Department assistant director said in a letter to Paul: "We are not in a position to disclose publicly more details information concerning the Bureau's specific use of UAVs(drones)," saying that information is classified.

The FBI says its drones are not armed with weapons and they are not used for "general surveillance".

It added that every request to use a drone is reviewed by FBI lawyers.
