Martin's Mom Won't Let Verdict 'Define Who Trayvon Was'

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The mother of Florida teen Trayvon Martin says she's not going to let the not guilty verdict for George Zimmerman "define who Trayvon was."

Speaking before the Urban League Conference during a Friday afternoon luncheon in Philadelphia, Sybrina Fulton told attendees, "My message to you is please use my story, please use my tragedy, please use my broken heart to say to yourself, 'We cannot let this happen to anybody else's child.'"

Her appearance comes the day after a second juror from the six-member panel that acquitted Zimmerman in the fatal shooting case spoke out to the media.

That juror, known as "B29" during the trial and now identifying herself as "Maddy," said that in her mind Zimmerman "got away with murder" in the case last year out of Sanford, Fla.

The juror said she wanted to convict Zimmerman of second-degree murder, but in the end her hands were tied by lack of evidence, and she feels like she let Martin's parents down.

Fulton addressed the juror's remarks in a statement Thursday night, saying it was "devastating" for her family to hear the comments they "already knew in our hearts to be true."

But Fulton did not address the juror's remarks directly in Friday's less-than-10-minute speech before the Urban League.

Instead, Fulton talked about putting God first, quoted a Bible verse, and reiterating, "As I said before, Trayvon was my son, but Trayvon was also your son."

She asked conference members to wrap their minds around what has happened and receiving "the absolute worst telephone call you can receive as a parent."

Without mentioning Florida's stand-your-ground law by name, Fulton blamed it for a list of experiences her son will never have.

She said Trayvon will miss out on things like going to the prom, graduating and attending college "all because of a law -- a law that has prevented the person who shot and killed my son to be held accountable and to pay for this awful crime."

The Martin family is pledging to use a foundation started in the late 17-year-old's name to make a difference.

Fulton also told conference members, "I know that God is using me, my family, to make a change."

FOX 29's Bruce Gordon will have more on Fulton's appearance coming up on the FOX 29 News at 5 and 6.
