Saving money on your back-to-school supplies

Posted: Updated:

Back-to-school time is exciting for kids of all ages, and their parents, too. But, sparks can often fade when it comes to totaling the impact buying school supplies can have on the wallet. As school supply lists get longer, the bill to pay for them gets even heavier.

Hoping to ease your back-to-school burden, Good Day Atlanta's Joanne Feldman came across a few ways to stretch your back-to-school dollar.

Seventh-grader Max Hause's enthusiasm about going back to school -- "It reminds me that summer's almost over and some not so fun things are gonna happen; but, it's school so ... it's required" – is pretty much matched by his mom's enthusiasm for paying the bill to get him ready for it.

Dawn Cushing said, "A little overwhelmed with all the stuff you need to get for back to school."

Part of coping with the big bite that buying school supplies can take out of your wallet is being sure to plan ahead.

First, make a list – and, stick to it!

As difficult as it might be, don't give in to your son or daughters' pleading for a brand-new backpack. That is, if last year's is just a good. In fact, you might want to leave your kids at while you do the back-to-school shopping.

Also, make sure you're armed with a school supplies list from your child's school. Often you can get it only or at your local school supply store.

Second, before you hit the stores, check around for the lowest prices both online, in local fliers and in newspapers. Be sure to clip or print coupons when you can and bring them with you when you shop.

Third, rather than waiting until a month or two before the new school year starts to buy your school supplies, buy them year round. If you see a great deal or discount in April, take advantage of it then.

Lastly, remember that Georgia's tax-free holiday is coming up on August 9-10. Click here to view and print PDF document of the complete list.
