Indiana man drowns in Lake Michigan

BEVERLY SHORES, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man drowned after swimming in Lake Michigan at the Indiana Dunes.

The man was seen struggling in three-to-five foot waves at Lake View Beach at the Indiana Dunes about 5:30 p.m., according to the National Park Service.

Family members tried to reach him but two family members had to be rescued from the water, the National Park Service said.

The man was found floating about 10 feet from shore, the National Park Service said. He was under water about 20 minutes before he was pulled to shore.

He was unresponsive and emergency crews began CPR and an AED was also used, the National Park Service said.

Gonzola Silva, 37, of Lafayette, Indiana, was taken in critical condition to St. Anthony's Hospital in Michigan City, Indiana where he was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m., the National Park Service said.

The National Weather Service had issued a hazardous beach advisory through Monday morning with waves expected to range between four-to-five feet.
