PHOENIX -

A 38-year-old man charged with his wife with child abuse in the death of their severely malnourished 15-month-old daughter has pleaded not guilty.

Ernest Ingram entered the plea Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Phoenix police responded to the couple's home on July 10 after receiving a call from the mother, Denise Snow-Ingram, that the child wasn't breathing. The infant later died at a hospital.

According to police, the parents said the child hadn't seen a doctor since birth due to their religious beliefs.

Police said the girl weighed less than 9 pounds and suffered from "profound malnutrition," along with numerous bone fractures.

The Ingrams and their seven children live in a small two bedroom apartment near downtown Phoenix.  The children are now in Child Protective Service's custody.
