White Sox deal Peavy in 3-way trade with Red Sox and Tigers

Posted: Updated:

CLEVELAND – The Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers have completed a three-team trade today, with the White Sox acquiring outfielder Avisail Garcia (from Detroit via Boston), as well as Red Sox minor league infielder Cleulius Rondon and pitchers Francelis Montas and Jeffery Wendelken.

The White Sox sent pitcher Jake Peavy to Boston as part of the trade, while Detroit acquired infielder Jose Iglesias from the Red Sox.  The Red Sox also received pitcher Brayan Villarreal from Detroit.

Garcia, 22, is hitting .380 (65-171) with seven doubles, three triples, six home runs, 27 RBI and 32 runs scored over 39 games combined this season with Class AAA Toledo and Class A Lakeland.  The 6-foot-4, 240-pound right-handed hitter also posted a .424 on-base and .561 slugging percentage between the two stops.  Garcia began the season on the disabled list with a bruised right heel and appeared in six games with Lakeland on a rehabilitation assignment.

He also appeared in 30 games with the Tigers this season, batting .241 (20-83) with two home runs and 10 RBI.  Garcia, Detroit's Minor League Player of the Year in 2012, entered this season rated by Baseball America as the No. 2 Prospect in the Tigers organization.

Garcia will be assigned to Class AAA Charlotte.

"Garcia is a very young, five-tool player who already has spent time in the major leagues," said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager.  "Our scouts are extremely optimistic about his future and view him as a potential impact talent for many years to come."

Garcia is a career .269 hitter (35-130) with three home runs and 13 RBI over 53 major league games with Detroit from 2012-13.  He made his major-league debut on August 31, 2012 vs. the White Sox.

Montas, 20, is 2-9 with a 5.70 ERA (54 ER/85.1 IP) and 96 strikeouts over 19 games (18 starts) with Class A Greenville in the Red Sox organization.  The 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-hander originally was signed as a free agent by Boston on December 14, 2009.  Montas, who is from San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, is 3-18 with a 5.54 ERA (101 ER/164.0 IP) and 171 strikeouts in 49 games (37 starts) over four seasons (2010-13) in the Boston system.

Rondon, 19, is hitting .276 (34-123) with one home run, 10 RBI and 13 runs scored in 37 games with Class A Lowell in the Boston organization.  Rondon, a switch hitter, originally was signed as a free agent on November 19, 2010.  The 6-foot, 155-pound native of Maracay, Venezuela has appeared in 147 games in the Boston system from 2011-13, batting .216 (111-514) with three home runs and 53 RBI. He has appeared in 111 games at shortstop and 30 at second base.

Wendelken, 20, is 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA (20 ER/65.0 IP), 10 saves and 54 strikeouts over 27 relief appearances with Greenville this season.  The 6-foot, 190-pound right-hander was selected by Boston in the 13th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.  Wendelken, who goes by J.B., is 4-0 with a 2.40 ERA (23 ER/86.1 IP),

12 saves and 82 strikeouts in 40 relief appearances over two seasons in the Red Sox system (2012-13).

Peavy, 32, is 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA (38 ER/80.0 IP), one complete game and 76 strikeouts over 13 starts with the White Sox in 2013.  He was acquired from San Diego on July 31, 2009 in exchange for pitchers Dexter Carter, Aaron Poreda, Clayton Richard and Adam Russell.

"We cannot say enough about Jake's intensity, effort, approach to the game and clubhouse leadership during his five seasons with the White Sox," Hahn said.  "Jake is a veteran competitor who makes his team better every day, not just when he takes the ball."

Peavy was 36-29 with a 4.00 ERA (239 ER/537.2 IP), seven complete games,

three shutouts and 476 strikeouts in 84 appearances (83 starts) over five seasons with the White Sox from 2009-13.
