The art of consignment with help from the expert

ATLANTA -

1. When consigning your items - make sure they are from a smoke free environment, gently used, clean and pressed. Preferably dry cleaned and make sure that all buttons & zippers are attached.

2. If consigning higher-end items such as purses, wallets, shoes or jewelry - keep original receipts, tags and authenticity cards with these items. It makes the authenticating process easier, and it ensures the potential purchaser that they are purchasing the real deal.

3. Let your consignment shop know if items have been altered, it should not be a problem, it's just good to inform customers & encourage them to try on items.

4. Whomever you chose to consign with should send you an itemized list of your items, with how they will price your items and what will be your cut. Standard is 50/50 or 60/40

5. Typically after 90 days if your items don't sell most places donate clothing to charity, make sure you are aware of this and agree to the terms.

6. Sometimes there is a minimum number of items you can consign for first time consigners, call ahead to confirm.

7. Convenience is key! Do find a consignment shop that wants to make your life a little easier...for example offering in home pickup service, styling consultations, and mailing out payments monthly.

8. Things to expect - Expect for your items to sell for about 40-60% of the retail price depending on the wear. Beware of places that don't charge enough for you items. You do have a right to reject the way your items are being priced.

9. Make it a habit of getting rid of what you are not using on a quarterly basis, once you make some money from the items you consigned, you can put it towards some new items that you will use. Out with the old and in with the new!
