DETROIT (WJBK) -

A summer camp for special needs kids and their siblings is being held this week at the Detroit Institute for Children.

We asked Deb Gershune why the camp is some important.

"This is the only camp ... around that actually adapts to them, and it provides a camp that's built specifically for them, built by therapists, run by therapists. It allows them to participate in things they would never get to do, and then their brothers and sisters get to do it right along with them," she said.

Gershune added that some of the kids the camp serves includes those with autism, cerebral palsy and sensory processing disorders.

Aside from the summer camp, Gershune said the Detroit Institute for Children provides "occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech and language therapy from birth to 26."

The organization is a nonprofit and always looking for donations.
