Hooking Up And Logging On

Posted: Updated:

Most of us take it for granted.  We log on to our computers, we click on the internet connection, we're in !  The world is at our fingertips. But …if you don't live at Starbucks or McDonalds or on an Amtrak train,  it costs money, usually more than 100 dollars a month once you bundle it with phone and cable.. and that's low.

But what if you just can't afford it, or it's not even available where you live?  That my friends is a big problem, which brings me to Mar Vista Gardens Public Housing project on the West side of LA this morning.  There, a pretty big sized crowd gathered to hear the announcement that  a 300, 000 dollar  pilot program is going to bring free wireless internet to the hundreds of apartments there where people either don't have it or can't afford it. This is great news.

Think of your kids in school and how much they rely on the internet for everything from research to emailing teachers to getting the curriculum to even downloading books and homework assignments. You just can't compete without it , which is why ‘closing the digital divide' as it's called is so crucial.  I mean what's the point of spending 30 million dollars, as the LAUSD is doing, to outfit literally every one of their 650,000 students with a brand new ipad, if you don't have them have access to the internet once they get home w/ that little hi tech toy ? Just makes sense, and it's nice to see public agencies ( with the support of State Legislators , finally), doing what makes sense. I talked to some very impressive young people about what all this means to them, and you'll hear from them at 5p and again at 10 on the Fox 11 News .
