Summer Streets returns to NYC

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

2013 Summer Streets made its return Saturday despite the inclement weather, with seven miles of car-free streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park.

Summer Streets will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Aug. 3, 10 and 17. The event provides activities for people of all ages including the “Voice Tunnel,” which is an interactive light and sound installation at in the Park Avenue Tunnel created by Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer.

The tunnel was exclusively open to pedestrians for the first time in 174 years.

"For more than 150 years, the Park Avenue tunnel has been hidden in plain sight for pedestrians, offering first a glimpse from a horse carriage, then a train seat, and then through a car window," said Commissioner Sadik-Khan. "Summer Streets brings New Yorkers up close with this engineering marvel through Rafael's Voice Tunnel, which is as much about interactive art as it is a new view of the archeology of New York."

The annual Saturday event also includes the return of the popular 165-foot-long, 25-foot-high zip line at Foley Square, a 25-foot-tall rock climbing wall at the Soho rest stop at Spring and Lafayette streets and the DOT's free helmet distribution and fitting and the City Picnic area at the Midtown rest stop at 25th Street and Park Avenue.

Mayor Bill de Blasio won't be reimbursing the city for personal travels that involve his security detail. "We have followed the conflict of interest board guidelines. I am following their guidelines to the letter," said de Blasio. The mayor has been heavily criticized for not paying the city back for travel expenses. Attention around the issue started last week when de Blasio was spotted not paying for a subway ride to Barclays Center while on official business.
