What started in DeLand as a simple stolen car report, unfolded into a multi-agency murder investigation after Lake County Sherriff's deputies found a woman's body in Sorrento.
A man called DeLand police early Friday morning saying his car had been stolen from the Hunters Creek Apartments.
About six hours later, officers returned to the same apartment complex, after a woman called the Orlando Police Department, claiming her son had confessed to murdering his girlfriend, then dumping her body. When police got to the victim's apartment, they said the evidence there matched the woman's statement.
The agencies involved said the investigation led them to Lake County, where a woman's body was found in a car in an overgrown lot near the intersection of 46 and CR 437.
People who live and work in the area said it's a quiet, secluded place. "It would be an appropriate place for somebody to try and hide something," Linda Landry told Fox 35 News.
20 year old Khambrel Hadley is in Orange County jail, accused of murdering his girlfriend and stealing a car.
The medical examiner still needs to make a final identification of the victim. Police are still working to figure out what led to her death.
