Woman groped at Tempe grocery store speaks out

TEMPE, Ariz. -

Tempe Police are still trying to identify a man who is suspected of groping women at grocery stores around the city.

One woman says she was with her young daughter when she was inappropriately touched by the man.

The woman believes the man waited until she was on an aisle where no one else was before he assaulted her.

Police believe he groped at least two other women in Tempe grocery stores.

They're concerned the attacks could escalate if he isn't caught.

Marlo Ramsay says she was in a grocery store aisle, alone with her 6-year-old daughter, when a man walked behind her and grabbed her butt.

"Just grabbed it, and I mean he grabbed it hard where I could feel it afterwards," said Ramsay.

Ramsay says no one else was around.

"I turned around and yelled at him and he said that he was sorry and kept on walking," said Ramsay.

Ramsay says the incident happened at the beginning of July at a Fry's on McClintock and Baseline in Tempe.

"I was absolutely stunned. I stood there shocked and I didn't know what to do," said Ramsay. "I carry Mace on me all the time and that didn't even cross my mind. I had my 6-year-old daughter with me, I wasn't about to get violent with this man."

Ramsay called her husband, who told her to call police.

"My initial reaction was, they're not going to be able to do anything," said Ramsay.

But investigators believe the same man groped another woman at the Fry's on Guadalupe and McClintock and a third woman at the Fry's on Rural and Southern, all in Tempe.

Images of the man were captured on store surveillance video.

"In bars and stuff like that's to be expected, but not the middle of the day at the grocery store," said Ramsay.

Ramsay said she had to explain to her 6-year-old daughter what happened.

"I said that man just touched mommy in a bad way and that's why we're calling the police," said Ramsay. "That shows her people can't get away with that kind of stuff."

Ramsay hopes the photos will help catch the grocery store groper.

"I think somebody would have to be sick to do that or it's a big joke to them or something, but it's not a joke, you can't do that to women," said Ramsay.

Ramsay estimates the man is in his early 20s.

Fry's is aware of the grocery store groping and told us, "We want customers to be safe and if there's aberrant behavior, we want police involved and we will help in any way we can."
