Boy injured 'gustnado' touches down at Cocoa Beach

Posted: Updated:

A 15-year-old is being treated for a head injury after a funnel cloud touched down on Cocoa Beach near Minuteman Causeway and highway A1A.

Brevard County Ocean Rescue Assistant Chief Eisen Witcher says the funnel whirled down onto the sand Sunday afternoon, spinning for about 15 seconds before moving onto the ocean for another 20 seconds.  Umbrellas, kayaks and pop-up tents were blown off the ground from the wind.

Cocoa Beach Emergency Manager reports there were wind gust of 45 miles per hour.   The National Weather Service later identified the event as a "gustnado," which is similar to a dust devil.

The injured boy was transported by ambulance to Cape Canaveral Hospital.  No other injuries were immediately reported.
