Is your child being bullied? Know the warning signs

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It's back to school for several metro Atlanta counties Monday, and school officials say the start of a new school year is an ideal time to talk to your son or daughter about bullying.

Rising 8th grader Paige Groome takes time to show a new student, Haven Lambert, the ropes. Haven will be a 6th grader at Booth Middle School in Fayette County.

She's decided to attend Camp Warrior, a program that pairs 8th graders with 6th graders before school starts. It helps make the first day of school just a little less scary.

Paige said, "Like opening a locker and having seven classes, it can be overwhelming when you first come into Booth."

And, it's not just logistics. It's a part of Booth's ‘No Bullying' policy. Kristin Christelli is a counselor at Booth. She says though technology has expanded bullying opportunities, it's definition hasn't changed.

Kristin Christelli, of Booth Middle School, said, "It's the haves and the have-nots, the picking on, the non-acceptance of people being different."

She says you should monitor what your children are doing on their phones and computers. To stay ahead of bullying, be sure to know what your son or daughter is saying and doing online. If you suspect bullying, then give the school a chance to deal with it first.

Kristin said, "We're here. We know it. And, maybe we can smooth it out before it turns into something more than it has to be."

Also, be sure to encourage your student to communicate with you and to stand up for other students who are being bullied.

Kristin says the number one sign your child is being bullied is a change in their behavior – like becoming withdrawn or suddenly not wanting to go to school or a particular class.

You've probably heard of a match-making service that helps people find their soul mates. But you may not know that there's a nonprofit in Atlanta that offers a similar service....for people to find....the perfect pet.
