PHILADELPHIA -

Phillies left-handed reliever Antonio Bastardo is among a dozen players accepting 50-game suspensions for violations of the league's drug policy, Major League Baseball confirmed Monday.

Reports of the 50-game suspensions came as the baseball world awaited final word on what would become of the highest-profile player facing potential punishment, the New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez.

Senior baseball writer Ken Rosenthal tweeted out a list of names Monday afternoon. Later in the day, the league issued a news release with the names of the same 12 players, including one free-agent.

Then, at 3 p.m. the league put out two press releases, one announcing the 50-game suspensions and a separate one saying that A-Rod has been suspended through 2014.

Bastardo, 27, came up with the Phillies in 2009. This season, he's got a 3-2 record with two saves in five opportunities and an ERA of 2.32, doing a good job during an otherwise rough year for the Phillies' bullpen.

Overall, the team is now 16.5 games back in the N.L. East after getting swept by the division-leading Atlanta Braves over the weekend.

Phillies President David Montgomery issued the following statement after Bastardo's suspension was confirmed by the league:

"Obviously, the Phillies are very disappointed to learn of Antonio Bastardo's violation of Major League Baseball's Drug Program. We strongly believe in the Program and look forward to a time when performance enhancing drugs are completely out of baseball. Hopefully the sanctions announced today will bring us closer to that day. We respect the fact that Antonio has acknowledged his serious mistake and accepted his 50-game suspension."

The other MLB players reported by Rosenthal to be suspended for 50 games and later confirmed by the league are:

  • Nelson Cruz, OF, Texas Rangers;
  • Jhonny Peralta, SS, Detroit Tigers;
  • Jordany Valdespin, 2B/OF, New York Mets;
  • Everth Cabrera, SS, San Diego Padres;
  • Francisco Cervelli, C, New York Yankees;
  • Jesus Montero, C/1B, Seattle Mariners;
  • Cesar Puello, OF, New York Mets;
  • Sergio Escalona, P, Houston Astros;
  • Fautino De Los Santos, P, San Diego Padres;
  • Fernando Martinez, OF, New York Yankees;
  • and free-agent pitcher Jordan Norberto.

Three players who already served 50-game suspensions received no additional punishments, according to the league. They are: Bartolo Colon, P, Oakland Athletics; Melky Cabrera, OF, Blue Jays; and Yasmani Grandal, C, Padres.

Two others – Gio Gonzalez, P, Washington Nationals, and Danny Valencia, 3B, Baltimore Orioles – were cleared of any involvement, Rosenthal reported and the league confirmed.

And former National League MVP Ryan Braun, of the Milwaukee Brewers, has already accepted a 65-game suspension that lasts for the remainder of the season.
