Copper thefts threaten Atlanta charity

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

An Atlanta charity says thieves have targeted them twice in six weeks. The Georgia Parent Support Network says it is in danger of not being help to help children after crooks struck several of the group's air conditioning units.

Sue Smith helps run the organization, which she says helps families who have children have mental illness. Workers help 50 to 100 families at a time with therapy, tutoring and college assistance. But the program is now in jeopardy after thieves stole copper and other parts of three new air conditioning units on Monday.

Six weeks ago, thieves did the same thing.

Smith said that the thefts cost around $8,000 each time.

"It's amazing for $100 worth of copper that it could have such a devastating effect," Smith said.

The charity says that it doesn't have enough money to pay for repairs, and it says it needs help to lock down the units to prevent future thefts.

"I would think the cages would be enough. I would think the walls would be enough. I thought the camera would help but I don't know what to do next," Smith said. "Every dollar we don't have that we have to spend on anything else takes away from our ability to serve the children."

Anyone willing to help to organization is asked to call 404-758-4500 ext. 101.
