Police-Involved Shooting In North Philadelphia

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A 37-year-old man is under arrest after police say he fired at officers with a high-powered weapon.

Officers recovered a Tech 9 firearm from the scene of a police-involved shooting in North Philadelphia near 11th and Huntingdon Sunday afternoon. This was hours after investigators say a man pointed the weapon at police.

Investigators are looking into whether the suspect fired two shots at an officer, missing his target both times.

Cops confirm that the officer returned fire with two shots, missing the suspect, but hitting the back window of a Chevy Malibu.

Sources tell FOX 29 that the incident began with the suspect running down Warnock Street before the gunfire erupted near 11th and Huntingdon. A witness at the scene said she heard the suspect fire at least five shots in the neighborhood randomly before police even got there.

The suspect was arrested a few blocks up while trying to blend into a crowd. We're told the suspect dropped his prison ID card, and an officer recovered it, recognized the suspect and took him into custody before questioning him at central detectives.

Joann Gyant walks throughout North Philadelphia searching for an end to the violence and the increasing amount of police-involved shootings.

"It was like, Ok, another one?" she says. "I just want the community to just calm it down."

"It's shootings everyday, everywhere," says another resident.

As police process this latest incident. Residents like Joann boost their call for peace and security in the streets.

"Help needs to be put out here for each individual. Something needs to happen. This world is seriously in trouble," says Gyant.

Police say tonight that the suspect may have been high on the street drug Wet.
