Jurors hear tearful testimony in Victor Hill trial

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Jurors heard dramatic testimony on Monday in the corruption trial against Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill.

One of Hill's former staffers says he thought his salary arrangement was unethical, but the sheriff approved it.
    
Former Clayton County public information officer Jonathan Newton cried when prosecutors asked him to describe Hill after the sheriff lost his 2008 primary election.

Newton testified Hill hired him as a correction officer for $33,000 annually. But Newton told the jury that Hill told him he had ways to pay him on the side that would raise his salary to $60,000.

Prosecutors say Newton did campaign work and even wrote a book about Hill while on the county payroll.

Newton said that unpublished book on the Hill's life took a dark turn when Hill lost the 2008 primary to Kem Kimbrough. He said that the book changed from an autobiography to a "tell-all account" of Clayton County figure "with dirt and gossip and garbage that [Hill] wanted to say."

Newton is charged with 12 crimes for his part in allegedly accepting kickbacks in addition to his county salary. Newton told jurors it was an arrangement Sheriff Hill knew about and approved of.

The defense tried to cut into Newton's credibility by repeatedly calling him a liar and pointing out that he has immunity.

The state is expected to rest its case on Tuesday.
