PHILADELPHIA -

A Philadelphia police officer who was shot Tuesday in the city's Feltonville section remains in critical condition after surgery, city officials said during a late afternoon update on his condition.

Police Officer Edward Davies, 41, of the 25th District, was shot once in the abdomen around noon on the 400 block of West Annsbury Street.

According to police, a man fled during a car stop for a taillight that was out, ran into a store at Fourth and Annsbury, and that's where the officer was shot.

Police say the gunman was arrested "after a violent struggle," and a weapon was recovered.

The suspect, 31-year-old Eric Torres, suffered "minor injuries" and is in custody at Albert Einstein Medical Center, police said.

Davies went to Temple University Hospital, where he has undergone the first of what are expected to be multiple surgeries for injuries officials are calling "life-threatening." Doctors are keeping him sedated to keep him resting and not moving.

According to preliminary information, police say it was just before noon when another officer made a vehicle stop at Fifth and Allegheny streets. The driver was evasive when asked questions and, after providing his information, sped off.

That officer tried to arrest the driver but lost him, so he radioed in the information, and officers found the car on Second Street. As that happened, 9-1-1 got a call that the driver had run into a corner store at Fourth and Annsbury.

Several officers ran inside, struggled with the male for at least two minutes, and that's when police allege that Torres fired the shot that struck the officer.

Davies is married and a six-year veteran of the force.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said Torres has 12 prior arrests, including for narcotics charges, and he has assaulted police on at least five occasions.

The .45-caliber Glock that police say Torres used was reported stolen after a burglary last year.

Mayor Michael Nutter said the shooting of an officer once again shows the dangerous conditions that police, as well as civilians, face on the streets.

And the mayor said the incident points to why the city has focused so heavily on getting illegal weapons off the streets and especially out of the hands of criminals.

Nutter urged the public to keep Davies and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Torres is facing charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, among other counts, authorities said.

Asked about another ex-con shooting an officer, Ramsey said his thoughts are "not fit for prime-time TV, let's leave it at that."

"Right now, let's just pray for the recovery of Officer Davies," the commissioner said.

He added said of Torres, "We've got plenty of time to start worrying about this guy and why he's out, what he did in the past and everything. He should never see the light of day again, that's for sure. We'll do everything in our power to see to it that he will never hurt anybody again – ever. And whatever it takes to do that, we're going to do it."

And this evening, with a search warrant in hand, crime scene investigators converged on a home less than a block away where Torres lived. They brought out bags of evidence.
