Flag Sculpture Draws Debate

Posted: Updated:

Usually they're saluting the flag, but some veterans in New Jersey aren't happy with the way the colors are being displayed at the entrance to a new park in their honor.

An artist unveiled a brick flag sculpture situated on a path in the veteran's park at Oak Valley Elementary School, located at College Boulevard and Cornell Avenue. The flag sculpture gives the appearance of an American flag waving in the air. But the sculpture has drawn criticism because the flag is set on the ground, and it almost looks like something built for skateboarders.

According to critics, the positioning of the flag on the ground, and it's upward sloping corners invites people to walk on the sculpture and skateboarders to jump off it. The design almost invites disrespect toward the symbol of America. Army Ranger Jim Ramer has written to the South Jersey Times, saying that he's seen dogs relieve themselves on Old Glory and kids skateboard and bike off it.

Other people have defended the sculpture, saying that the rules of flag etiquette apply to cloth, but not to brick and mortar statues like the one in question. They also say that the monument has a path around it, and that the statue's designer, Frank Seder, is a Vietnam Navy veteran.

Town officials tell us they're having a fence put around the statue until they have a resolution at the next town meeting, slated for Sept. 9. And they'll have a ceremony when the fence is erected.

Frank, the artist who made the statue for the park, has not yet returned FOX 29's calls seeking comment.

FOX 29's Shawnette Wilson will have more on this story tonight at 10 p.m.
