Connecticut prison population spikes

Posted: Updated:

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut's Correction Department is dealing with an expected spike in the prison population.

The average prisoner count for the first week in August is 585 inmates more than the state projected at the start of the year.

Michael Lawlor, the governor's undersecretary for criminal justice policy at the Office of Policy and Management, says the rise is due in large part to changes in the state's parole system that have kept more offenders behind bars for longer periods of time.

He tells the Republican-American newspaper that the situation is manageable, and that space is expected to be available to house all those prisoners.

The prison population averaged 17,115 inmates a day for the first week of August. That is up 762 prisoners from the January average.
