Jane Lynch: Schooled In The Arts, You Become A Whole Person

Posted: Updated:

"We need a villain."

If a FOX executive hadn't spoken those words, Jane Lynch might never have rocketed to stardom in the hit TV show, "Glee."

"In the original pilot there was no Sue Sylvester," reveals Lynch on Good Day L.A.  "And then Kevin Reilly, the head of FOX Television, said 'We need a villain."

Without missing a beat, Ryan Reynolds, the creator of "Glee," told Reilly, "It will be the cheerleading coach and her name will be Sue Sylvester." That's how Sue was born, but how did Jane get the role? "I had worked with Ryan ten years prior on "Popular."  I did an episode and we remained friends.

"You just have no idea what will happen.  That's why I say, "Say yes to everything.  Except porno."

In addition to "Glee," Jane was on Good Day L.A. with Steve Edwards and guest-host Heather Dubrow ("The Real Housewives of Orange County") to talk about her upcoming movie, "Afternoon Delight," and most important to her, a fund-raising campaign which she's hoping you'll support, for "Adopt The Arts," which helps to restore arts programs which have been taken out of public schools because of budget cuts.

Fun facts about Jane Lynch:

  • She gained fame in Christopher Guest's improv mockumentary pictures such as Best in Show.
  • Notable awards she has won for her portrayal of Sue Sylvester in Glee include the Primetime Emmy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, TCA Award for Individual Achievement in Comedy, Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries, or Television Film, and the People's Choice Award for Favorite TV Comedy Actress.
  • She had a recurring role in the Warner Bros. situation comedy Two and a Half Men.
  • Lynch spent fifteen years in Chicago, acting in the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and, at the time of her audition, was one of only two women picked to join The Second City comedy troupe
  • Lynch got her start in films in 1988, playing a small role in the film Vice Versa. In 1993, she had a secondary role as a doctor alongside Harrison Ford in The Fugitive.
