Creekside HS football player dies after injury in game

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -

The Creekside High School community is in shock after tragedy struck at their scrimmage game on Friday night in College Park. Seminoles' cornerback DeAntre Turman was hurt while playing in the preseason game against the Banneker Trojans, and he passed away at the hospital.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office tells FOX 5 News that Turman fractured his third cervical vertebrae during the third quarter of the scrimmage game when he was playing defense. Officials say it appeared at the time to be a routine tackle, but it sent him to the hospital.

Friends tell FOX 5 that DeAntre's dream was to play professional football. He was a junior at Creekside, and wore #2 for the Seminoles.

Teammates and friends gathered outside Grady Memorial Hospital early Saturday morning. That's where DeAntre was taken when he was hurt, and it's also where those who knew and loved him learned what happened. They knew him as "TreTre."

His stepfather, Larry Poole, told FOX 5 DeAntre excelled both on and off the field. He said he was always striving to be the best at everything he did. DeAntre has been named one of the top prospects in Georgia for the 2015 class, and in June, he received a scholarship offer from the University of Kentucky, according to 247sports.com.

DeAntre was hurt when he made a hit on the field. Reginald Mideau, an assistant coach at Banneker, said he say DeAntre make the play, and at first he didn't think anything was wrong. He said their quarterback threw a pass to their tight end, and as DeAntre hit the tight end, at the same time he tried to catch the football. Mideau said it looked like a he made a great hit, but then he didn't get up.

The news of DeAntre's death quickly spread on social media. Hundreds of comments were left on our High 5 Sports Facebook page in support of him, and a number of local teams, players and coaches expressed their condolences on Twitter.

DeAntre was @TreTre_2 on Twitter, and his description reads, "i came from nothing just trying to make it to the top." He tweeted about the Creekside-Banneker matchup on July 23, saying "first week we go bck to school on Friday at Banneker who goin?"

The same day, he tweeted, "Can football season come any slower," and earlier in the month, he tweeted, "They ask me TreTre what is your motivation I look them dead in the eyes and tell em the struggle motivates me #ILivedThatLife."

Fulton County school officials say grief counselors are meeting with players and coaches from both schools Saturday, and they'll do the same with other students and teachers at Creekside on Monday.

Sunday, family, friends and classmates gathered for a vigil to remember TreTre. They agree that he was as energetic off the field as he was on it.
