Coast Guard coordinating clean-up of fuel spill

Posted: Updated:

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Authorities are cleaning up diesel fuel that spilled from two fishing boats near Hilton Head Island.

The Coast Guard says its Charleston command center was notified Friday about a fuel sheen spotted in the Jarvis Creek area. Members of the Coast Guard from Charleston and Savannah, Ga., responded.

They determined the pollution came from two grounded commercial fishing boats named the Lady Essie and Diane. They believe the vessels hold a combined 1,300 gallons of fuel. It's unknown how much fuel spilled into the water.

The Coast Guard is coordinating with SWS Environmental Services to contain the spill and limit the environmental impact.

The incident remains under investigation.
