Rainy weather affecting road projects

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

The rainy weather has had an impact on many road projects.  The Georgia Department of Transportation hopes dry conditions will prevail soon.

Weeks of rain in Gwinnett County have dampened a 3.5 year project to create a new interchange for State Route 20 and Collins Hill Road on Highway 316.

Because it began during relatively dry conditions, a large amount of critical grading work has been done and the work is still listed as on schedule, but other road projects face more challenges because earth-moving work is mired in mud.

"In Georgia, our construction season is typically March to November and that is usually when we have warm, dry weather to get out on the roads and do the majority of our construction work. This year not so much," said Terri Pope of the Georgia DOT.

Pope said that one big road project site in northeast Georgia's White County had 18 inches of rain over five weeks this summer.

"When you get a heavy rain like this, it can take a week-plus to dry out, and we are not having that many dry days," Pope said.

Not far from Highway 316, Georgia Gwinnett College students are among those affected by the rain and road work. The fall semester began Monday for close to 10,000 students.

The Highway 316 project is set for completion in March of 2015. The Georgia DOT is hoping that weather conditions allow it to finish on time.
