NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The New York State Police say that an officer killed an armed man after responding to a report of an emotionally disturbed person.

It happened about 6:20 p.m. Monday in East Fishkill.

Police say they got a 911 call about a armed man at a home on Caprenter Hill Road near the Taconic State Parkway.

Responding members of the state police, Dutchess sheriff’s office, and East Fishkill police established a perimeter surrounding the home. The man, identified as 40-year-old John J. Terzani, was outside his home.

Throughout the evening, crisis negotiators from all three agencies maintained contact wither in an attempt to get him to peacefully surrender himself and his weapon. Negotiations continued for approximately 5 hours.

Troopers attempted to subdue Terzani with the use of a TASER, which they say was ineffective.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., police say Terzani pointed his handgun at law enforcement officers, at which time, a seven year veteran of the State Police opened fire, hitting and killing Terzani.

Terzani was transported by ambulance to Saint Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, where he was pronounced deceased early Tuesday morning.

Carpenter Hill Road remained closed while police investigated.

President Barack Obama is going on a fundraising sweep through New York and Rhode Island as he continues to help Democrats raise money for November's elections. Obama headlines three events on Friday. Two in Westchester County, and the third is in Newport, Rhode Island. The New York fundraisers will benefit the Democratic National Committee, which is still paying off debt from the 2012 campaign season.
