DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Authorities evacuated a neighborhood near an elementary school in DeKalb County where shots were fired on Tuesday.

Police say 20-year-old Michael Brandon Hill was taken into custody after shots were fired at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy Elementary School on 2nd Avenue in DeKalb County.

Later that afternoon, police evacuated more than two dozen homes on East Lilac Lane, which is located near McNair Academy, FOX 5's Chris Shaw reports.

A bomb squad and SWAT team surrounded the home where Hill had been staying, but ultimately found no explosives.

Police did remove a gun from the home.

A woman who lives in the house, Alex (she asked not to use her last name), said that Hill had been staying there since his apartment burned down a couple of weeks ago.

"He sleeps on our couch. I mean, we feed him. I don't know what happened," she said.

Alex said that authorities talked to her about Hill's past.

"So I don't know if that triggered stuff. I mean his mom's birthday was around the corner, she died. I mean, he's very troubled," Alex said.

Alex said she's thankful that the shooting didn't turn tragic.

"I'm just happy no kids were hurt and I'm just happy that..he's off the streets. Because if that could happen, he could've done something to our family – we don't know what happened," she said.

According to the Henry County Police Department, Hill was arrested in March 2012 and charged with terroristic threats. He was sentenced to three years' probation and anger management.
