Law enforcement agencies' response to school shooting lauded

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

DeKalb County's sheriff praised the efforts of law enforcement officers from several agencies who worked together to bring students to safety after a school shooting on Tuesday.

Authorities say Michael Brandon Hill, 20, was arrested after firing several shots at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy Elementary School on Tuesday afternoon. There were no injuries.

DeKalb County Sheriff's Deputies J.L. Hart, S. Daniels and T. Wortham raced to the scene after a call went out that a gunman was at the school.

"As we were approaching the building, there were some shots were fired," Daniels said.

Deputy Wortham had worked at the school in the past and knew the layout. Wortham led others, including U.S. Marshals, through the hallways to the front office, where they found the alleged gunman on his stomach on the floor.

"When he was on the ground, one of the weapons I observed was sitting on the counter, which was an AK-47," said Daniels.

Deputies said Hill didn't resist and said very little.

"He stated he was sorry, he was off his meds," Wortham said.

There was a school employee in the office as well. The deputies say she appeared to be calm.

"She had got off the phone because the shooter told her to get off the phone," said Daniels. "She was sitting at the desk."

Officers from various agencies immediately began a sweep of the school to make sure it was clear and that the children were carefully evacuated.

"They put their lives in harm's way and we are incredibly proud of them," said DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown.

Brown says all agencies worked together and it was a textbook apprehension of the gunman.

"It could have been a lot worse, obviously, but every single child is alive to talk about it," Brown said.
