What To Do When The Weight Won't Come Off

AVALON, N.J. -

Singer Jen Creed has a lot to sing about these days! Recently married, the 37-year-old is equally thrilled about the amount of weight she's lost.

"When we got engaged, I knew I wanted to look my best for my wedding," says Creed.

But even though the Center City resident was eating right, the pounds weren't coming off initially.

"I was in love. We would go out all of the time. There were bottles of wine. I was enjoying myself," she says.

Yet, it seemed as if she had reached a plateau, as far her weight was concerned.

"I have a stomach, hips and a behind! I never knew how heavy I had gotten. I think we all need a catalyst in our life[.] For me, it was my wedding. I wanted to look my best for my wedding." she says.

So Jen started exercising, here and there. Soon after, she enlisted the help of trainer, Cheryl Herzog, owner of Surfside Fitness in Avalon, New Jersey!

"She was just going for runs [and] doing cardio vascular exercises. It really wasn't what she needed. She needed to increase her muscle mass," says Herzog.

Cheryl says it may be the reason why weight won't come off, even if someone is exercising and eating right.

"Everybody is different. It's often hormonal, especially when we're talking about middle age women," says Herzog.

For Nora Cerone, a stay-at-home mom with three young sons, it was that, and more.

"I hit a wall! I definitely hit a wall! Life happens[.] Three deaths in my family. It just halted. I just stopped," says Cerone.

The former volleyball and basketball coach says she was shocked to learn her weight had jumped to 172 pounds.

"It's a complete change from your 20's when you're active and you're single. You get married and have kids and your body is not the same anymore," says Cerone.

And yet that shouldn't stop anyone from continuing their work out, according to trainer Herzog.

"In her situation, it's such a shock, all of the sudden, you feel out of control. Sometimes it's just out of balance and it's a matter of adding supplements. Sometimes it can be medicine. And sometimes, it's getting off all of the Medicines and getting yourself to a neutral place where your body is saying, ‘ok, I understand,'" says Herzog.

Experts say knowing what's going on inside can help a woman better cope with her individual situation.

"I got to college and there were more important things like hanging out, partying, and eating! I packed on a lot of weight. I was a little over 300lbs!" says Brigette McKeogh, a client.

"I just lost a lot of motivation because I was like, no matter what I do, the weight's not going to come off. My body is not going to change," says Stacey Lash, a 40 year old mom.

"I had a hysterectomy after having a fibroid tumor taken out," says Stacey Gelman. That, on top of surviving two major back surgeries.

So, is there any fool proof way to shed the pounds no matter what's going on? surprisingly, trainer Herzog says, yes! And the answer is: strength training.

"I can sit and explain it for hours.. it's invaluable! The only way you can increase your metabolic rate is through strength training. Cardiovascular helps you to lose the fat, and lose the additional pounds. But to increase your muscle mass is equal to increasing your metabolism and that's how you lose weight!!!" says Herzog.

And that's a fact that newly wed Jen Creed can attest to.
