Kirk, Quigley push for visa-free travel for Poles

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Two Illinois lawmakers have urged Congress to pass pending legislation allowing Polish citizens to visit the United States for up to 90 days without a visa.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley visited Chicago's Polish American Association Wednesday to reiterate their support.

Despite Poland's close ties to the U.S., it's 1 of the few European nations still excluded from the Visa Waiver Program.

Quigley says including Poland would strengthen links to the longstanding U.S. ally. The Democrat says Poland has been denied the status because of what he calls the waiver program's "outdate structure."

Kirk, a Republican, adds that granting the visa-free status would boost tourism by Poles to the U.S.

Chicago's large Polish-American community already makes the city a popular destination for tourists from Poland.
