MESA, Ariz. -

Two suspects were shot and killed by Mesa Police Friday night in two separate officer-involved shootings.

Early Friday night, officers from Mesa Police's violent offender unit were executing an arrest warrant when they were forced to fire upon a suspect.

About 7:30 p.m., officers from Mesa Police and the U.S. Marshals office were called to the area of Central and Dobbins in south Phoenix.

They were serving an arrest warrant to 27-year-old Joseph Mavis, who was wanted for domestic violence and aggravated assault.

When they confronted the suspect, he had a weapon on him. Mavis began reaching for a gun in his pants pocket, and fearing for their safety, a Mesa officer fired a less lethal shot at Mavis.

Despite being hit by the bullet, police say Mavis raised a gun at officers, causing several officers to fire at him.

No officers were hurt, but Mavis was hit and died at the scene.

About 9 p.m., Mesa Police were involved in another officer-involved shooting, this time in north Phoenix at 32nd St and Greenway. These incidents are not related at all, aside from the fact that Mesa Police is involved.

29-year-old Jonathan Tricarico was shot and killed at the Greenway scene.

This incident started with a stolen car out of Mesa, and Tricarico was tracked to the Filiberto's restaurant. Mesa officers approached him, who fled and drew a gun. Tricarico reportedly fired upon the officers, who returned fire, killing him.

Greenway was shut down between SR51 and 32nd St for the investigation.

Both investigations are ongoing.
