CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police are speaking with a "person of interest" in a baseball bat attack that left a Chicago Police officer seriously hurt Saturday in West Englewood.

The officer was struck in the head with a blunt object while responding to a battery in progress about 12:40 a.m. in the 5700 block of South Winchester Avenue, police said previously.

The officer was hurt while trying to break up a fight in the street, police said. One of several males involved in the fight hit the officer in the head with a baseball bat after the officer got out of his car.

Authorities are now speaking with "person of interest" in connection with the attack, a police source said. No charges have been filed as of late Monday.

The officer was initially taken in serious condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where his condition was stabilized, police said Saturday.

An update on the officer's condition was not available Monday evening.

Area South detectives are investigating.
