The NFL has suspended New York Jets running back Mike Goodson for four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy, the Jets announced Monday.

Goodson, who signed with the team as a free agent in the off-season, has been MIA from training camp and the preseason "to focus on a personal matter," the Jets said. But the player is back.

"While we welcome Mike back to the organization, we have had direct conversations to make our expectations very clear as we work together to help him move forward in a positive manner, both on and off the field," team said in a statement.

He will be allowed to attend meetings and work on his fitness at the practice facility in Florham Park, but he won't be allowed to practice or play.

"I've been away from the team to take care of some important personal things. The time was helpful to me and now that I am back, I am going to do everything I can to contribute to the team," Goodson said in a statement released by the Jets. "I appreciate all of the support from the Jets organization and I'm thankful to be back with my teammates."

Goodson, who was busted on drugs and weapons charges in New Jersey in May, will be eligible to rejoin the roster on September 30, the day after the Jets play the Tennessee Titans.

A law enforcement official says he sent a video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancée to an NFL executive five months ago, while league executives have insisted they didn't see the violent images until this week. The person played The Associated Press a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirming the video arrived. A female voice expresses thanks and says: "You're right. It's terrible."
