Stolen bucket truck knocks out power on Long Island

The driver of a stolen bucket truck knocked down several trees, utility poles, power lines and traffic lights in Elmont, Long Island, causing a widespread power outage.

Police say that transit worker Joel Grasmann, 53, of Elmont, broke into an MTA yard in Queens where he stole welding equipment and the truck.

Grasman is accused of driving the truck with the boom extended along Meacham Ave. at about 4 a.m. before abandoning it on North Corona Ave.

As many as eight traffic lights were knocked down or damaged.

Grasman was arrested while walking home.  He has a criminal record that includes arrests for stolen property, petty larceny and DWI.

Police say it was unclear if Grasmann extended the bucket intentionally or accidentally.

An estimated 6,000 customers lost power.

Utility crews along with phone and cable workers were called to the affected zone to restore services.

Officials say it could take several days before the area is back to normal.

Meacham Avenue remained closed between Dutch Broadway and just south of the Hempstead Turnpike.

    Reminder for drivers that as children head back to school in Nassau County so too, will the speed cameras in school zones. Officials say speed cams will be fully operational at 25 locations this week. That will more than double eventually.
