National expert testifies in Richard Chrisman trial

PHOENIX -

A gunshot wound expert took the stand in the Richard Chrisman trial Tuesday. Chrisman is the former police officer facing second degree murder for shooting a man.

The expert on stand was involved in another trial that made worldwide headlines earlier this summer. He testified in the George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin trial.

He told the jury was paid more than $3,000 to testify. He also said the suspect Chrisman shot was high on meth.

Dr. Vincent Dimaio took the stand in Richard Chrisman's defense. He told the jury he doesn't believe Daniel Rodriguez had both his hands up in the air when he was shot.

"There's been a suggestion that the deceased was standing like this when he was shot then turned him to the right and his left hand came down. It's possible but the problem is you don't know which one the first shot and all of this is speculation," testified Dr. Vincent Dimaio.

Dimaio says there was stippling on Rodriguez's arm that indicates he had his arm in front of his chest and was leaning forward -- towards Chrisman when he was shot. But Dimaio also admitted all of these are just theories.

"He got shot twice in the chest, one of them was first, the other one was second. The gun was 3 to 4 feet away and at one time the arm was in front of the chest."

Things got heated when prosecutor Juan Martinez questioned Dimaio.

Dimaio admitted his theory doesn't take into account a wall that the bullet hit.

"You don't understand the wall is totally unreliable," he said.

Martinez argued that wall would change Dimaio's theory. Dimaio disagreed.

"If we assume your position, bending back the gun has to be up here because the gun has to point at the skin. This guy has to be bent backwards at the waist, doesn't make any sense," said Dr. Dimaio.

The jury asked lots of detailed questions about the testimony. At one point, they asked attorneys to measure the length of a Taser prong for them.
