LYON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

A stretch of westbound I-96 remains closed Wednesday in western Oakland County following a fatal accident, police say.

According to Michigan State Police, the crash occurred near Kent Lake Road around 11 a.m. when witnesses reported a motorist losing control of their vehicle and swerving across the lanes. A semi-truck driver applied his brakes to avoid a collision and was struck from behind by a state of Michigan VTS employee transporting a patrol car on a flatbed wrecker.

The driver of the wrecker was pronounced dead at the scene, police say. His identity was not immediately released.

Police say the stretch of I-96 West will remain closed between Wixom (Exit 159) Milford Roads (Exit 155) for the next several hours as the investigation continues. Motorists are advised to use Grand River as a possible alternate.
