Bridging the wide gap in Georgia's after-school care

ATLANTA -

Good, quality after-school programs for teens are needed. Here are some stats that you may find surprising:

According to the Georgia Afterschool Investment Council, more than 1 million of the state's kids (half of Georgia's school age children) spend time away from their parents during the 3 to 6 p.m. weekday hours.  This time-frame also happens to be when most violent juvenile crimes occur.

Recent data provided by GAIC indicates that only 16 percent of Georgia's children from two working parent families are enrolled in after-school programs; while 21 percent of the state's children in grades K-12 are taking care of themselves.

While the demand for safe, accessible and affordable after-school programs in Georgia is high, there are not nearly enough slots available. Helping to fill in that gap is non-profit Quality Care for Children. It's a free service intended to help parents find after-school programs.

And, they've just launched their first smartphone app to help parents on-the-go track down quality after-school care for their son or daughter.
