Gov. Brewer names new leader for Ariz. Nat. Guard

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - The commander of the Arizona Air National Guard's 162nd Fighter Wing in Tucson has been named the new adjutant general of the Arizona National Guard.

Gov. Jan Brewer named Col. Michael T. McGuire to the position Wednesday. McGuire replaces Maj. Gen. Hugo Salazar, who is retiring early next month.

Salazar has commanded the 8,000 member state guard since 2008 and was in charge this spring when a federal report found it suffered from unethical leadership, lax discipline, rogue conduct and a failure to protect abuse victims. He unveiled reforms in May, when his pending retirement became known.

McGuire is a career Air Force and Air Guard officer who has commanded the 162nd Wing since early 2011. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1987 and became an F-16 pilot.
