Parents Outraged By Kitson Drug T-Shirts

Posted: Updated:

Shirts and Sweatshirts sold at Kitson stores have the words Vicodin, Xanax and Adderall are splashed across the back, much like an athlete's name on a jersey.

Some parents are outranged, saying the shirts glamorize prescription drugs.  FOX 11 talked to Jodie Barber, her son died 3 years ago from overdosing on several of those very prescription drugs promoted on these shirts.

"It's wrong we have an epidemic occurring across the United States.  It's totally absolutely horrendous and its wrong.  And they need to remove them immediately, because we have an epidemic and kids are dying every 24 minutes in the United States from prescription drug overdoses," said Barber.

She's done much research on the topic and even co-produced a documentary on the topic, since her son Jarrod's death.

Kitson allowed FOX 11 to get video of the controversial clothing at Fashion Island store.  Employees wouldn't comment instead they pointed us to this statement from the designer, posted on Kitson's Facebook page:

"I have created a collection of t-shirts that are a parody of pop culture. This particular collection of prescription tee's is simply a commentary on what I see happening in our society. Call it what you may, but art in all forms is created off of pop culture and the social situations that surround it. A large percentage of Americans are prescribed these drugs by doctors everyday for legitimate reasons.  These are not illegal substances.  These tee's are not meant to encourage prescription drug abuse, but they open the door to a much needed dialogue, as they seem to be doing right now, then mission accomplished." – Brian Lichtenberg, Kitson Designer

Kitson also says the proceeds of the line will be donated to non-profits that help drug addicts.

Barber calls the statement a cop out, and says donating the proceeds isn't good enough.  She wants the clothing pulled from shelves.
