STATE FAIR: Vendors say sales down due to heat-thinned crowd

Posted: Updated:

Vendors at the Minnesota State Fair are setting their eyes on the next four days because many are facing a challenge they never expected -- sales are down because crowds stayed home to avoid the heat.

"On Monday, we had our worst day in 12 years -- until Tuesday came along and eclipsed that," Mike Brennan, of Axels, told FOX 9 News.

The vendors have never had to try so hard, and it's never been easier to walk right up to an empty window.

"The first three days, I was ahead," Carla wood, of Carl's Gizmos, said. "Then, it just tanked."

Those serving up hot plates have been hit especially hard.

"There's no appetite for anybody," said Spaghetti Eddie Porcelli. "I don't even want to make it."

All say that once Sunday hit and attendance dropped by 40,000, sales also dropped by 40 to 50 percent. It's been that way every day since.

"We need four stellar days," Tim "Giggles" Weiss told FOX 9. "Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday."

Up at Giggles, they put up a huge pavilion to help draw in people -- but they're still not eating or drinking a lot. They're actually up from this day last year, but they still hope a corner will be turned.

"Normally, you look out here and you can't see the asphalt," Mike Brennan said. "This week, you could shoot a cannon through here."

Huge crowds are still expected this weekend, especially on Sunday and Monday now that it's cooler. Even so, vendors say sales need to skyrocket for them to catch up.

"They need to probably triple or quadruple what we've been doing," Brennan estimated.

Yet, there is not just hope on the grounds. The vendors say they have faith that Minnesotans don't want to miss their fair.
