Ex-ASU frat Sigma Alpha Epsilon named worst frat in America

TEMPE, Ariz. -

It's not the kind of list you want to land on. Rolling Stone magazine has named ASU's Sigma Alpha Epsilon the most out-of-control fraternity in the country.

The chapter has been plagued by trouble over the past year, and ASU has kicked the chapter off campus.

ASU booted SAE from campus a few months ago after the fraternity kept getting into serious trouble involving members drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. Those incidents are what landed SAE the "most out-of-control" title.

The latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine names Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Arizona State University the most "out-of-control frat in America."

The fraternity is now banned at ASU, but some students worry it paints a bad picture of the university.

"It sort of unfairly associates with this party school image that they have gone a long way towards remedying," says ASU senior Joseph Urbine.

"First thing people are going to think whenever they're reading it is, yeah they're going to associate ASU with the party school image. But I don't necessarily think that's fair," says senior Zachary Branum.

What earned the ASU chapter of SAE that title? A few very high profile incidents in the last year, including the drowning death of freshman Jack Culolias in Tempe Town Lake after a night of drinking, and pledge Aidan Mohr dropped off at Tempe St. Luke's Hospital with a sticky note attached to him. He nearly died, and had a blood alcohol content of .47.

The ranking attracting unwanted attention for ASU, but Tempe Police Sergeant Mike Pooley says it should be a reminder to all students.

"We're trying to get the message out to them saying that horrible things can happen to you if you're not responsible, if you're drinking and you're underage. These are things that lead to some of these incidents."

SAE is not the only Arizona fraternity landing on the top 10 list. Pi Kappa Phi at the University of Arizona came in at number 9 -- also for 3 incidents of excessive alcohol consumption by fraternity brothers that landed some of them in the hospital.
