Bring Joe Home: Man hikes 800 miles for Phoenix Children's Hospital

PHOENIX -

A valley man began a hike to raise money for Phoenix Children's Hospital on Sunday.  The hike will take a month and a half and he's covering 800 miles across three states.

Joe Hume is a true Phoenix Children's Hospital Hero.  He's raising money for his 21-year-old nephew who has battled Crohn's Disease since he was 12-years-old.

"It's a very, very tough disease. Joe's diet is very limited and he struggles every day to maintain his fitness and ability to show up for life unlike at my hike at the end, I can take my backpack off and put it away in storage.  The people that have these sorts of diseases.. inflammatory bowel diseases they have to wear their backpack all day long," said Hume.

His goal is to raise $30,000.  That number representing the 30th anniversary of PCH.  The money will go to the hospital and their new inflammatory bowel disease clinic.

How long does Hume think it's going to take to raise the funds?

"I hope very quickly as soon as we reach that milestone of $30,000, I have the opportunity to get off the trail or stay on the trail and do some more miles and maybe raise some more money for the hospital."

With an average of 20 miles a day, the task seems large and overwhelming to us, but he assures me he is more than prepared.

"As a matter of fact ,the first of June I made the commitment to do the hike by playing 18 holes at Papago Park and walking and beyond that I have been every morning at 4 leaving the house at 4:30, walking parking garages, stadium steps at the ASU track stadium and putting in a lot of mileage in order to build the base of fitness to be able to do this 800 or try to do this 800 miles."

Communication will be sparse, but every five to seven days, he will re-stock supplies and make sure he is well equipped to log more miles.

He's most looking forward to that celebration at the end with his family.

"They'll be joining me somewhere along the trail probably for a glass of cabernet or a beer and the likes.  I have a great family and they are supporting me 100 percent."
