MARTA plans to vote on safety campaign

Posted: Updated:

MARTA officials say they have heard your complaints and want to make your riding experience more pleasant and safer. The transit authority's board will vote later this month on launching its "Ride with Respect" campaign.

The new program will monitor riders' behavior with cameras. The agency could ban violators from its trains and buses for up to a year.

Some regular riders say they're worried their safety when they ride the transit authority's buses and trains.

FOX 5 photojournalist Mike Daly says his 2-year-old son was nearly injured on a MARTA train Friday night when a woman threw a bottle at a man during an argument.

"The bottle sailed right past my child's head, just barely missed me, and hit the side of the train and broke," Daly said.

Daly says he and other riders used their cellphones to report the incident to MARTA police. He said he likes that MARTA's "See and Say" smartphone app allows riders to report suspicious activity to police.

"That way folks nearby can anonymously make a quick notification to the emergency folks and don't have to listen to any sort of retaliation from the people who are causing the trouble," Daly said.

MARTA officials will launch its  "Ride with Respect" campaign as soon as next month. There are already cameras on MARTA's entire fleet of buses.

The plan is to install them on all MARTA trains as well.
