Witness saves woman from carjacking at Great Lakes Crossing

Posted: Updated:

Auburn Hills, Mich. (WJBK) -- A quick thinking teen helps save a shopper from carjackers at Great Lakes Crossing Outlet Mall. Auburn Hills police say a 47 year old Lake Orion woman was walking to her car in the parking lot on August 31st, when two men confronted her.

One of the men pushed a gun into her back and tried to force her into her car. She refused and dropped to the ground screaming. An 18 year old from Clinton Township heard the screams, then walked over and told the men she was on the phone with police. The suspects grabbed the woman's keys and cell phone, then took off.

The witness's bold move gave the victim a chance to get away, but police say bystanders need to be careful, "The witness was cautious as she approached and called 911. Always contact 911 first if you can. Keep a safe distance," said Lt. Jill McDonnell of the Auburn Hills Police. Police are praising the 47 year old woman, "The victim did a great job by not going with the suspects and dropping to the ground screaming for help. Never ever get into a vehicle if you can avoid it. Creating noise and drawing attention is not wanted by perpetrators," said Lt. McDonnell.

Police arrested Edellis Alexander and Isaiah Herron a short time later. Officers also found a gun. Alexander and Herron -- both 20 year olds from Mt. Morris Township -- are now charged with armed robbery, carjacking, attempted unlawful imprisonment, receiving and concealing a firearm, and felon in possession of a firearm. Both are being held in the Oakland County Jail on one million dollars bond.

If you have any information that could help police with their investigation of this case call the Auburn Hills Police Department at 248-370-9444.
