New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie got a big welcome from students and teachers today at the Beach Haven School.

Superstorm Sandy slammed into the elementary school. The storm dumped 30 inches of rain, swamping the century-old building.

After the storm the students had to travel 15 miles to another elementary school.

The governor said that overall sandy caused more than $40 million in damages to schools across New Jersey. Nearly $2.5 million in repairs were needed before the Beach Haven school could re-open its doors Wednesday.

Christie said that while most of the Sandy-damaged schools have welcomed students back, one grade school on Long Beach Island will remain closed until March 2014.
