Officer shot, man dead after shootout in Fulton County

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

An exchange of gunfire in a south Fulton County neighborhood Thursday morning left one person dead and a Fulton County police officer in the hospital, according to Fulton Cpl. Kay Lester.

The GBI is taking the lead in the investigation to discern the series of events that led to gunfire and death.

Cpl. Lester says the Fulton officer was on routine patrol when he came across a "suspicious" person in the White City Road area of College Park about 8:20 a.m. Thursday. The officer's encounter with the person escalated into gunfire, Lester said.

The person suffered a fatal injury and the Fulton officer was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, police said. Cpl. Lester said the protective vest worn by the Fulton officer likely saved his life, having caught the bullet.

Police activity in the area led to nearby Tubman Elementary School, located on Lakeshore Drive, being placed under a temporary lockdown, according to the Fulton County Schools spokesperson.

Police didn't release details on what occurred during the encounter leading directly up to the gunfire. No names have been released.

The officer is confirmed to be a 20-year veteran of the police force. He was treated and released from the hospital and say been placed on paid administrative leave, according to Lester.
