The man who terrorized young women (at Northern Virginia shopping malls in 2011) by slashing their backsides has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Inside the Fairfax County Courthouse, Johnny Guillen Pimentel told the judge, through a translator, "I'm very remorseful for all the things... I please ask you to pardon me."

Over a series of months in 2011, nine women were stabbed in the buttocks at various shopping centers in Northern Virginia. According to a prosecutor, the weapon was a razor sharp hobby knife, often hidden in a bag.

One victim was 20 at the time, and she was visibly pregnant.

Security videos from the stores and shopping centers helped police identify Pimentel as a suspect, but he had fled to his native Peru. He was ultimately taken into custody there and spent eleven months in a prison his defense attorney called "horrific".

Under a plea bargain, Pimentel could get no more than seven years, but defense counsel asked for less, pointing out he'd never before been convicted of a serious crime. The judge said "no", and imposed the full seven years plus 13 more years suspended, in case of further trouble from the day laborer.

A half dozen family members and friends showed up at the sentencing. Only one would speak to reporters. Euclides Paredes was asked what kind of man was Pimentel: "He's pretty nice. He's normal, like any others. And, you know, I can't explain to you, I can't explain to anybody [what he did] because he was normal."

According to a source familiar with the case Johnny Guillen Pimentel was in the U.S. illegally in 2011. After he serves his prison sentence he will almost certainly be deported back to Peru.

As for the motive for the attacks on the backsides of women, the prosecutor said Pimentel never told police. Defense attorney Robert Frank was asked if his client ever explained the bizarre behavior to him. "Not really," said Frank.
