Chicago may pay $12.3M for 2 police torture cases

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) -- A Chicago City Council panel is recommending more multimillion dollar payouts for exonerated inmates who say police tortured them into giving false confessions.

The two $6.15 million settlements are for Ronald Kitchen and Marvin Reeves, but need to be approved next week by the full city council. The pair spent more than two decades in prison for the murders of five people before being released in 2009.

The payouts were recommended Friday by the city's Finance Committee. If they're approved, they'll bring the total amount of awards in the torture cases tied to former Chicago police Lt. Jon Burge to $83 million.

Burge is in prison for obstruction of justice and perjury.

The settlements mean former Mayor Richard M. Daley wouldn't have to testify about the systematic abuse of suspects.
